My name is David McGovern and I’m a traditional stone carver based in Monikie, Angus. I was always fascinated by Pictish art and history. I started carving local sandstone around 2010 and became a full time carver in 2014 after a 20 year career in IT. I decided life was too short not to give it a go! I started out carving Pictish motifs and designs from the late medieval West Highland Schools of carving. From there I graduated onto museum replicas, public monuments and memorials.
My online shop is always open! I also hold open studios and attend events all over Angus, Fife and Perthshire. My workshop is open by appointment and I host a summer carving school in Angus. Inspiration for my work comes from the ancient art around us. For memorial work, I always carve something unique and personal, to celebrate a life rather than simply record the passing.
In 2021 i am hoping to restart my summer carving school- I miss the visitors. I plan to move to 2 new venues in 2021- Murton Farm and The Crannog Centre. I have a large commission for a full size replica of a Pictish stone in the Highlands, and a new Pictish-inspired stone to be installed at St Vigeans.
